As parents of seven boisterous children ke”h, bikes are integral part of our children’s childhood.

Ranging in age from 2 1/2 to 13 years old, each of our children has and has had a bicycle from a young age (yes, we do hand-me downs when appropriate), and the benefits of bike riding are readily apparent as a great confidence booster, fostering a healthy sense of independence, increased core muscle strength, leading to better balance, not to mention the exercise they get, all while having fun!

Sounds like a no-brainer, but let’s face it. Kids are constantly growing and bicycles come in lots of sizes and options, which can easily make purchasing the best bike for your child confusing, overwhelming, or worse, wrong for your child after all of that hassle…

We recently spent time researching and purchasing a bicycle and accessories for our 13 year old boy there, and put together this great guide for bicycle purchasing for ALL of your boys, ages 2+.

Without further ado, here you have it:

Let’s start by saying that we love Amazon! We use them all the time, and find that being a Prime member offers incredible value and use them for so many things we used to run out to the store for, and the same or 2-day shipping – love, love, love.

BUT you may realize or not, Walmart.com has been pouring millions of dollars into playing catch-up, and we were pleasantly surprised at the ease and features of the new site, including same day store pickup with free bicycle assembly, or free 2-day shipping without any membership fees if you’d rather have it shipped.

Topped off with being very accommodating on returns, Walmart.com is in our humble opinion, a great choice for your bicycle purchases, particularily when stacked up against Amazon.

Here is our list of recommended boys bicycles by age, with features, reviews, links and more.

We are working on a guide for girls bikes as well, and plan to publish that in the near future, iy”H.

The Bike: Radio Flyer Folding Tricycle

The Price: $39.97

Recommended Age: 2-4

What we like about it: The cute storage box at back, the adjustable seat as kids grow

The best review we found:

by: Grandma
Purchased for grandson 20 months old and he LOVES it! So do we! The adjustable seat with the back is helpful to keep him balanced and in position to learn how to use the pedals. The streamers on the handlebars are a very nice touch and reminds me of my bike when I was little! The tires and tire housing are plastic so the bike is not heavy and it rolls easily. I like the fact that the bike folds a bit (not a lot) but that helps to get it in and out of car, or for storage. What is most fun for this kid is the little storage compartment at the back. He has used this to hold some of his small toys, collecting rocks, flowers, etc. I like it so much I am going to order a pink one for my grand-daughter as well.

The Bike: Radio Flyer Glide & Go Balance Bike with Air Tires

The Price: 40.99

Recommended Age: 3-6

Wheel Size: 12″

What we like about it: While not for every kid, ‘balance bikes’ are great for eliminating the training wheel phase, (which kids can grow dependent on and have a hard time letting go of, instead) teaching balance right from the start.

My 3 year old loves it, took a bit of practice but he goes pretty quick now. Much more affordable version of a balance bike (which is temporary anyways). My 5 year old love it too and wanted me to take off her training wheels and peddles and turn hers into a balance bike too. Just make sure seat is at the proper height so they can ride comfortably (1/2 inch makes a difference). Only complaint is that the front wheel gets crooked sometimes and has to be aligned again, ive tried tightening the bolt, but it still happens. Overall it is a good value for the money, and air tires are nice.

For my 4 year old who has above average height, I was looking for 14″ bike with car image. I ordered this online, quick shipping and delivered within 5 days. Assembly was easy. Only need to assemble steering, seat, paddle, support wheels. It took 30 min only. My son was very happy to see the bike. Bike looks gorgeous, exactly as in picture. He loves to ride on it. Good thing about this bike is that it has both brake, hand and leg brake. Overall, we are very happy with it.

The bike arrived on time and nothing was broken. It was very easy to put together. We haven’t had any problems and my son loves it!It’s pretty straightforward for a little boys bike. The training wheels are adjustable to stay on the ground or to be moved up a little bit as kids get more confident. It has an easy brake system where they just push the pedals backwards to break. This is a really great starter bike.

I purchased this for a 6 year old boy. The bike was a bit on the large side for him but going by the height / bicycle size chart, he would have outgrown the smaller size bike in about 6 months. The bicycle itself came pre-assembled (It was a site to store order) so I didnt have to deal with assembling the bike. Apart from adjusting the tension on the brakes, everything else was perfectly assembled. The build of the bike is quite sturdy and I am sure it will last as long as needed. I have seen some stunts already executed with the bike: jumping off short ramps. I have seen a accident: tumble from coming down a hill too fast, Riding the bike into the curb (boys will be boys) and the bike has withstood all these with nary a scratch. I’d suggest this to a friend.

Great bike but slightly tall and heavy

My son is 8 years old and slightly small for his age. He was switching from a single speed 20″ so the main reason was to get the additional speeds. It is slightly taller than the 20″ he was coming from so I had to invert the seat bracket to get the seat an extra inch lower. Other than that, the bike is great. It shifts well and the brakes work great. The bike is slightly heavy due to the front and rear suspension. However, the main part of the frame is aluminum (front and rear end are steel) so you save about 7+ lbs over the slightly cheaper but similar all steel offerings.

What we like about it: Low Price and Basic build for a Feature-Rich Bicycle with 21 speeds, suspension and more

Seems like a solid bike at a decent price

It has it all: 21 speeds, rear and front suspension, cool design. My son is obsessed with video games and not very interested in off-line activities but once he saw his new bike, he was really excited. He says the ride is very nice. So now kids are asking me to ride bikes every possible moment, and it’s a blessing for a father. Hope the bike will last.
