New Jersey has so many hikes, it’s hard to single one out as being the most beautiful. However, this “Stairway to Heaven” hike lives up to its name.

The entire journey spans 7.3 miles and ranges from easy (boardwalk sections) to more difficult (hiking the rocky stairway up Waywayanda mountain).

Hike synopsis (from Hike boardwalks, a suspension bridge, hardwood forest, fields of wildflowers, train tracks, a cow pasture, a boulder field… before steeply climbing the “Stairway to Heaven” to one of the best viewpoints in NJ: Pinwheel Vista.

Distance from Passaic / Clifton / West Orange: Approx. 50-55 Min

Distance from Teaneck / Monsey: Approx. 55 Min /45 Min.

Distance from Elizabeth / Highland Park / Edison: Approx. 90 Min

Distance from Lakewood: Approx. 2 hours

Distance from Brooklyn: Approx. 1.5 to 2 hours (depends on traffic)


3 Recommended Options:

  • Super Short: 2.0 miles – Super-duper easy – only walking the boardwalk section and back.
  • Short-n-steep: 2.5 miles – Stairway to Heaven only. Start at the lot on Rt 94 instead.
  • Longer – The Appalachian trail continues in both directions for hundred of miles….

The Kittatinny Mountains are visible in the distance, farms in the valley below, and on a clear day, High Point Monument.
